Bullying - reducing risk, impact and solutions.
There are many types of bullying including physical, covert (indirect and not easily seen), verbal and social (using 3rd party relationships to hurt someone).
Bullying is deliberate and repeated actions for the intention to harm another. Cyberbullying are deliberate and repeated actions using technology for the intention to harm another.
Given the ever increasing integration of technology into our lives, covert, social and verbal bullying can all take place as a part of cyberbullying and involves the use of text, images, video, voice, live chat, live streaming and email, through to exclusion of people in online “groups” and repeated targeting of individuals in online games.
Impacts range from withdrawal from activities, disconnection, fearfulness, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, shame, decreased academic achievement, substance abuse, eating disorders, increased mental health issues and self harm.
While it is clear that the victims suffer, so do the other two participants in bullying. The bully and the bystander also need to be helped.
Beyond the physical, there is no shortage of devices, gossip websites, new sites, commenting systems, blogs, instant messaging services and social networks that enable bullying. (With the IoT and connectivity between devices, media, AR and VR, cyberbullying could go even further than what we see today).
We've partnered with the digital HUMAN LIBRARY to connect teachers and students with topic experts around the world.
We are keeping this open to all ideas & innovations to: reduce and prevent bullying; recovery & support; behavior change solutions (for all participants in bullying); through to reporting and policy.
Software, phone apps, awareness, mindfulness, education, transparency, media & storytelling, communication techniques, empathy development, new moderation & reporting systems, audit trails, verified identity, stress management, bio-sensors, IoT, psychology, trauma recovery, “community connections” and policy.
